Support & Therapy Groups

Support Groups and Therapy Groups can be a great way to benefit from the companionship of others with similar experiences.  There can be such empathy, learning from those who have gone before, as well some sometimes opportunities to pay forward what you may have already learned.  As the well loved African Proverb states, if you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together.

What's the difference between a Support Group and a Therapy Group?

In most cases, a support group is an open group where different people may come in or out in each meeting.  Support groups may go on indefinitely as different people come in and out. There will be a common topic and a facilitator who may or may not be a professional therapist but will guide the group with a light hand to allow for sharing and encouragement. Support groups are usually free of cost.

A therapy group is usually a time limited, closed group which means the same people will commit to the group for a certain number of meetings and share more intimately with the set group members.  These groups are led by trained professionals and may center on a topic, mode of therapy or other more specific issue.  Therapy groups also will have a fee.
